Isn’t life like that?”

“Isn’t life like that?” I asked.

“Don’t a lot of people go for the sure thing, working at jobs they hate?

They get bought off—some for twenty thousand dollars a year, others for fifty thousand.

Just like you, Mary. You couldn’t be bought off for twenty, but when I got to fifty, I hit your greed button. Some employees will put up with anything for a price: frustration, boredom, anger, humiliation. Why do they do it? Security! But experience has already taught you that job security is just an illusion.
