Middleton first met Prince William while she was studying at the University of St Andrews in 2001. The couple has been in a relationship over a period of last eight years with two brief splits as the only halts. Compared to Kate-William courtship which lasted over 8 years, Diana-Charles affair was really short.
Even though the Prince had known Diana for several years, they got romantically involved only a year before their wedding. Diana was accepted by the royal family and the Prince proposed her on February 1981.
